Shouts of “power to the people” rent the air as Local Government workers in Abia State erupted in jubilation at the announcement of an automatic promotion for them by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

The announcement was made today during the governor’s interactive session with members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) at the Ochendo International Conference Centre, Umuahia.

Governor Ikpeazu revealed that he had been under pressure to sack workers but had resisted such pressures and instead employed more, saying only a PDP government can guarantee the safety of their jobs and continue to improve their welfare. He therefore urged them to support and vote for Sir Okey Ahiwe, the PDP candidate for Saturday’s election.

Ikpeazu who admitted that he had not been able to solve all the challenges of Abia but that he had taken the state forward in critical development indices as attested to by statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, adding that there is no perfect system anywhere except in heaven.

He thanked the workers for their support over the years and assured that Chief Ahiwe will do even better than him.

On his part, the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Chief Okey Ahiwe KSJI urged the workers not to entertain any fears about the safety of their jobs as he is rather committed to enhancing their welfare and attend to their needs as a matter of priority.

While congratulating them on their new levels, he urged them to support him as partners in progress.

Responding, leader of the Union in Abia State, Comrade Ikechi Nwogwe spoke on behalf of the members who could not hide their excitement as they sang and danced, thanked the Governor for the kind gesture and promised that they would go all out to cast their votes for the PDP governorship candidate on Saturday.
