‘Pandemic Fee’: Abia State Government Implements N30,000 Waiver for ABSU Students
The Abia State Government has commenced the implementation of N30,000 waiver in the fees payable by students of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu.
Recall that a certain ‘pandemic fee’ charged the students by the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Uche Ikonne in the thick of COVID-19 pandemic to assist the institution in providing items needed for the prevention, control and management of the disease had caused a stir among students and was about to pit them against the university management until the Governor, who is the institution’s Visitor intervened by reversing the pandemic fee imposed on the students and rather went ahead to announce a N30,000 waiver in the usual fees payable by each student as a way of supporting them and their parents most of whom struggled in the thick of the pandemic.
Meanwhile, parents/guardians of ABSU Students have continued to pour encomiums on the Governor for the N30,000 waiver he granted the students.
Speaking to the media, some of the parents/guardians whose children/wards have benefited from the package, said the governor’s action is highly commendable, adding that the gesture is a very big relief to them.
The parents further noted that the relief is an immeasurable sacrifice by the Okezie Ikpeazu-led administration seeing that the institution will be losing close to N1bn from the waiver, and vowed that it was one sacrifice they will not take for granted.
